Weirdo Christian Entertainment

When I was a child, I remember being afraid of those kids shows on TBN that came on Saturday morning. The ones I remember had southern gospel music playing in the background while bizarro cookiemonster-like puppets lip synched to it. Actually, I’m still afraid of those puppets. In fact, if one of them popped up on the other side of my desk right now and started singing Gaither music I’m pretty sure I would wet my pants and assume the fetal position.

I saw on Craigslist the other day that someone was giving away a bunch of “Donkey Ollie” DVDs. “What!!!” went through my head. Naturally, I did a quick websearch to figure out what this “Donkey Ollie” character was. I had not aptly prepared myself for what followed. You can watch for yourself, though you might consider not doing it. I don’t think any descriptions on my end are necessary, except for the fact that Donkey Ollie’s lips really bother me. And his eyes. And everything else about the show.

While you’re at it check out The 3D Barbie Diaries for a joyous good time.

PS – Don’t get me wrong, I am glad that there are those who are trying to produce Christian entertainment for children. IMHO though, Gerbert was the thoroughbred of Christian kid shows. If you are a producer and you can’t meet the quality that was set with the Gerbmeister, you can take a hike for all I care.
